Cupid's shot Arriving too late I get back home But you're on your way What went astray Did he get elbowed? He missed the mark So now I’m so low He may be an angel But I’ll tell you what I'd like to kick his chubby butt I'm inside out My heart's on my sleeve Overexposed Naked and naïve I fell for you My love's awoken Then off the wall And now I'm broken All the kings horses And all the kings men Can't put my heart back together again My sweet nightmare I can't stop dreaming Yet I’m awake I might start screaming My solitude Bewilders my brain My loneliness I cannot contain Now a black bird Looms over my door Quothing and quothing "Nevermore" I'm upside down Drifting down river Stream over sky I start to shiver Here' come the falls I'm going over I hit the rocks And now there's closure The next lifetime’s A random spin A butterfly or just a man again... Butterfly

No Regerts 04:03
Walkin by the Parlor A tattoo caught your eye Draw it first with sharpie Let me tell you why The Chinese calligraphy You think looks so cool It says: "Dry Clean Only" So don't you play the fool Before getting lasting ink Take a little time to think Be-cause that needle hurts You don't want no regerts Have you heard the story About Johnny Depp? Tattooed 'Wi-no-na’ forever On his right tri-cep A few years later When they'd grown apart Shortened it to 'Wino' Kinda sad, but kinda smart Now he's got 40 tats From simple to sublime And though that needle hurts He's got no regerts What says "I don't need a job" Quite like a face tattoo? 'specially teardrops Or prison gang taboo Your tramp stamp seemed so swag 'til your skin began to sag – Now it distorts and puckers How you’ve come to hate that sucker You used to crave approval Now you're paying for removal Oh that needle hurts You don't want no regerts If you've got the cash to spend You can blast it with a laser If you think that scars are cool You could always use a razor You can try to cover-up With art that's bigger still Some cooler new design or A dark and solid fill Just please do think harder Then you did before Be-cause that needle hurts You don't want no regerts

Your cursed clickbaits clogging up my feed I served you all my cookies, what more do you need? I bought that freakin’ shirt over a week ago But still you show it to me, everywhere I go I’ve done some coding, so I know it’s true Your machine ain’t learning, hasn’t got a clue But it don’t have feelings, so it won’t get hurt When say I, that your A.I., is dumb as dirt You know the deal, it’s so unreal, bad algorithm! Know what I mean? Get off my screen, bad algorithm! Your hook-up app made you a Ted Talk hit Everybody loves to hear the juicy bits (but your) Derivations sure have got some nerve Trying to compute the perfect slopes and curves I’ll bet that laughter and good conversation Always outperform your most, complex equations Love is so much more than swiping left or right Put your Tinder in the Grindr ‘til you see the light You know the deal, it’s so unreal, bad algorithm! Know what I mean? Get off my screen, bad algorithm! Redd-it trolls, celebrities, and Gamestop boys Pump and dump away, their worthless stonks and coins Fuck off with your crypto and your NFTs…and all you Insta-Influencers and your Ponzi schemes As Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg Play PT Barnum to incels and nerds (..exciting) Nazi cyberpunks and Q-Anons To recruit Nextdoor anti-vaxxer yoga moms You know the deal, it’s so unreal, bad algorithm! Know what I mean? Get off my screen, bad algorithm! I’m here to advocate, we must exterminate: bad algorithms!

Let's go out to the country and leave all our troubles behind Let's go out to the country, leave this city behind We’ll go out where the air is clean, Do what we want without being seen Let's go out to the country and leave all our troubles behind Let's go up to the mountains and drink a little wine Let's drive up to the Blue Ridge mountains, drink a bottle of some cheap red wine We'll watch the sun melt down into the trees See the stars appearing, on an evening breeze Let's go up to the mountains and drink a little wine Let's go down by the river and smoke a little weed I've got a sack of Snoop Dang Doodle, we can smoke us up a bowl or three We’ll go skinny dipping, down in the stream Then we'll make love in the sweet moonbeams Let's go down by the river and smoke a little weed Let's go out to the country and ourselves some fun Yeah, let's go out to the country, away from everything and everyone Where we can smoke our weed, and drink our wine Where we can frolic, darlin’, underneath the pines Let's go out to the country and have ourselves some time

[Brokedown Palace intro] When we sat down last Thursday, for Thanksgiving supper I looked 'round the table and thought: man, this year has been a fucker Grabbed a plate, piled it high, w/turkey, stuffing, & some pie When we paused to break out bread, I took a breath & then I said: I'm Grateful...that I ain't Dead I'm glad there ain't six feet of dirt above my head Happy I'm not food for worms, or on the shelf inside an urn I'm Grateful...that I ain't Dead [Friend of the Devil interlude] (I’m a) Friend of the Devil (and I), Might as Well not ignore I'd Need a Miracle to be Knockin' on Heavens's Door…goin’ to Hell in a Bucket, that's the Promised Land you see Me-n-My Uncle playing cards and rolling dice with Stagger Lee [Crazy Finger interlude] (Well I) Feel Like a Stranger up here, Playing in the Band Harrys’s got Crazy Fingers, and Stuart Holme’s the Candyman The Other One in that tiny Space is, Justin on the Drumz The Music Never Stops, ‘Til the Morning Comes [Bertha interlude] Well Death Don't Have No Mercy, there’s no Help on the Way You can't pull a Slipknot or make an, Alabama Getaway Comes a Time that Deal goes down, you give The Wheel a spin When I lay beneath the Roses, may I rise to Terrapin [Uncle Johns Band interlude]   Weather Report calls for Cold Rain and Snow It’s High Time I was Truckin', so I'll hit the Golden Road Some day I will Lay Me Down, inside this Box of Rain But you know that my love for you it will Not Fade Away I'm Grateful...that I ain't Dead I'm glad Jack Straw ain’t shovelin’ dirt on my poor head (not) Casey Jones flyin' off the tracks (not) Delilah when the roof beams crack (not) Selling diamonds to Dupree (not) Peter hot as a hundred and three Not a sucker for Fellina Not set up by Billie Jean Not marching to Fennario That Dire Wolf is so scary-o I'm Grateful...that I ain't Dead Grateful... When I awoke this morning, I was alone in bed A depression in the pillow, where you used to lay your head You took my blankets with you, without a scrap to warm myself I was cold as leftovers, forgotten on the shelf Cold as leftovers… You treated my affection, like a dish you didn't need A meal you quit half eaten, now a bowl of tumbleweed Like an ancient slice of pizza, Saran-wrapped to a plate I guess my love had passed, your expiration date Oh yes, my love had passed… At first I did feel grateful, not to wind up in the trash Like all those fossilized remains of bygone succotash My love won't stay fresh long, while you're off who knows where? My poor heart is super-sized, won't fit in Tupperware Oh no, my poor heart… And now I hear you're hungry, for what you left behind That I'm back on your back burner, and now you'd be inclined To turn up your flames and try, to warm me up to you But now this table's turned, and just desserts are due Now this table's turned… Too late: this fridge is closed; I'm better since you're gone I don't wish my door would open, nor faint dim light come on I'll not be re-heated, like some stew that's getting old Revenge is a dish my darling, that's best served when it’s cold

I love Halloween - It's such a freaky scene Raise your voice, and let me hear you scream - I love Halloween Little kids in costumes – how they love to trick or treat A plastic pumpkin full of candy - much more than they can eat Sometimes they hide it in their room - to fool their mom and dad Sometimes the dog discovers it - and mostly that turns bad Pretty candy wrappers and the choc-lat that she chugged Now a pool of doggie vomit, barfed up on the rug But I love Halloween - We will get that carpet cleaned You can be Belle and I'll be Wolverine - I love Halloween Teenagers prefer the tricks - they're too cool for treats Soaping up your windows - and toilet paper in your trees There's no one at the door - but what is this burning bag? Foolishly you stomp it out - the smell could make you gag Rainbow candy Fentanyl is just an urban myth (but who) Put the flaming dog poo there? I’m gonna plead the 5th! I love Halloween - We'd run away unseen You can be Janet to my Frankenstein - I love Halloween College kids like parties - more than child’s play Dry ice in a trash can - black death punch made with grain They smile with discolored teeth - and ask you trip or treat? You know you’re not in Kansas - it's more like Shakedown Street The sweets they pass around - are of a stronger type Electric sugar cubes and something tasty in a pipe I love Halloween - A holiday for libertines! I'll be Jerry to your Diamond Queen - I love Halloween Some people call me Space Cowboy, some call me the Gangster of Love Some people call me Maurice, but I am not the Pompatus of Love I've been Your Worst Nightmare, I've been Sir Galahad As Harpo Marx I honked my horn, 'til everyone got mad I glued horns to my head one year, to try to terrify My friends just asked where my costume was, but it made my daughters cry I love Halloween - It's such a freaky scene [last time: a holiday for libertines] Raise your voice, and let me hear you scream - I love Halloween

I’d never seen her face before But riding by her cabin door, she called to me Come sit by my lonely fire Hear my fears and warm desires, won’t you comfort me? Was I too quick to choose? But how could I refuse? Sometimes when you win you lose, I went inside Sitting by the fires glow Feel the heat begin to grow, I wove my tale She was all alone and scared So many people never cared, they just turned away And then we kissed, how could I/he resist Take my hand, you precious man, we’ll bid this land goodbye Climb aboard an eagle’s back, towards a castle in the sky Floating through the mist of sleep with clouds all made of dreams Crossing seven oceans deep to an island of moonbeams Lady of a thousand faces, free from time and its disgraces Show me life’s undying cast, as these endless seconds pass Love me in ten thousand ways, I will remember all my days Show me everything you’ve seen, take me beyond ecstasy In the morning I awoke Fire now was only smoke, yeah, and she was gone Outside the house a cold wind howled Some wild creature on the prowl, this evil dawn When the windows all flew wide, and the door flew in Then I despaired inside, I knew my sin She was The Bride of the Wind

A leaf tossed on the breeze Began to form hypotheses Seeking deep reflection, ‘til the Wind lashed out from all directions So the fearless leaf Surrendered every last belief No time now to discriminate Just down the path and through the gate Into the hands of Fate… The thorn defends the rose And every open door will sometime close So though the water’s dark and deep I close my eyes and take the leap Into the hands of Fate… What are you fighting for? What strategy would win the war? Though we may surely die Our leader bolder turns and cries, ‘follow me!’ Into the hands of Fate… How can a mind so small, Begin to comprehend the All? When every single day When every single word we say (leads) Into the hands of fate…

Krampusnacht 04:45
I love Halloween, but trick or treat is done We dressed up in our costumes, and had our crazy fun Then we had Thanksgiving full of family and food We gathered round & feasted & gave our gratitude Before we get to Christmas, or even Christmas Eve There is a holiday, that lives in Infamy Listen children, you had best be good There’s something naughty, Christmas-time attracts He is coming, to your neighborhood Gross Vom Krampus, it is Krahmpusnacht The first time that I saw him, standing by the Christmas Tree My eyes were filled with wonder, and my heart was full of glee I mistook him for Saint Nicholas, with presents in his sack Until I saw from head to toe, that he was dressed in black Curvy horns upon his head, and spiky devil’s tail When he turned and grinned at me, well I began to wail Listen children, hear the words I’ve sung If he invites you, don’t jump up on his lap He will lick you, with his long red tongue Gross Vom Krampus, it is Krahmpusnacht   When you hang your stockings, kiddies, by the hearth with care You better pray its Santa, who will soon be there And hope that sound you’re hearing, is his reindeer on the roof Or is that Krampus skulking on a cloven hoof? Squeezing down your chimney, he hasn’t come to play He’ll throw you in a basket and stash you in his sleigh Listen children, he is on the prowl (and) Those aren’t presents, stuffed into his sack He will swat you, with a branch of birch Gross Vom Krampus, it is Krahmpusnacht In olden times the Krampus lived alone among the pines But now he’s got a smartphone, and he’s all online His profile’s up on Tinder and on eHarmony And he’s looking for some very kinky sensuality If you like your men all hairy, and don’t mind a goaty smell He’ll bring the whips and chains, & darlin’ he will ring your bell Listen ladies if you’re, buxom and you’re young, Oh how the Krampus wants to make contact He will lick you with his long red tongue Gross Vom Krampus, it is Krahmpusnacht

Fly on Home 04:45
Ladybug, ladybug won’t you fly on home? You’ve left your children and they’re all alone I’ve got a feeling, and I don’t know why I think I hear them screaming, come on now let’s fly Hush now, it’s nothing, just a trick of the wind I’m sure they’re safe in there, I won’t go back to check again Let’s just keep going, I like you by my side Don’t worry any more, come on, dear, let’s ride Ladybug, ladybug won’t you fly on home? You’ve left your children and they’re all alone I see smoke rising from your little shack Forget our evening, lady let’s turn back Hush now, it’s nothing, they’ve built a little fire The night is getting cold, no reason to inquire Let’s just keep going, I like you by my side Don’t worry any more, come on, dear, let’s ride Ladybug, ladybug won’t you fly on home? You’ve left your children and they’re all alone The flame are rising now, they’re reaching for the sky What is this madness I am seeing in your eyes Hush now, it’s nothing, that I wouldn’t do again I’ve wasted my best years waiting for a gentle man I would have loved your forever by my side But now you know I’ve murdered them, and that I won’t abide And then she took a knife and cut me to the heart Killed me at the crossroads as the twilight turned to dark Killed me for a dream that she will never call her own Ladybug, ladybug: fly on home

about

A collboration with engineer/producer Simon Tassano to bring 12 songs I've played at Songwriter Night at The Local in Charlottesville fully to life. Four tunes from 30+ years ago, and eight that were written for a songwriter prompt at some point in the last year or three. The most fun part for me was turning over almost all of the lead guitar work to friends to see what they would come up with. I'm so very pleased with the results and hope you enjoy them too!
